Shakespeare Festival in Globe Neuss-Programme
After two years of the corona pandemic, the Shakespeare Festival will finally take place again in the fascinating „home venue”, the Neusser Globe. The festival starts on Friday 6 May and ends on Sunday 5 June 2022.
With the new director and artistic director of the festival, Maja Delinić, the 2022 Shakespeare Festival will radiate international flair and enable an interdisciplinary encounter with William Shakespeare and his works. Acting meets lecture meets music meets art: The program of the Shakespeare Festival 2022 will be as diverse as the perspectives from which we can view one of the greatest playwrights of all time are diverse. For four weeks, 14 different companies from all over the world – including from Armenia, Great Britain, Italy and Russia – will perform 35 events at the Globe Theater Neuss. Well-known Shakespeare groups build on earlier successes just as “new faces” make their Neuss debut.
The HandleBards are there again! This time with their hilarious production of „Twelfth Night” („What you want”), whereby the bicycle as a trademark of the company should not be missing. The imaginative and fast-paced story about the interplay of feelings and the search for true identity is a great template for the HandleBards. In addition, the British troupe also have a wacky and hilarious version of „Romeo & Juliet” with them, which school children can also look forward to in a school screening on Friday, May 13, 2022 at 3 p.m.
Of course, the Bremen Shakespeare Company, which was also involved in the creation of the festival at the time, cannot be missing in Neuss. In addition to three monologues, they show a driven „Macbeth” who is desperately looking for love, honor, friendship and power – but in the end despairs of himself. The Rheinisches Landestheater Neuss deals with the young playwright William Shakespeare, who falls in love with a young Romeo actor during an audition. But in the further course of „Shakespeare in Love” the aspiring Romeo turns out to be a young woman lying at the theater man’s feet.
The audience can be very excited about StudioWill, a group from Armenia that knows how to impress with an exceptionally physical presence. She uses the narration text as a score, works with great energy and a special rhythm. The company presents a „Best Of Shakespeare”, a fast-paced collage of sonnets and fragments of Shakespeare’s tragedies.
The Turkish tiyatro BeReZe explores the question of how tyrants and murderers can sleep peacefully at night. With only two people on stage, the troupe performs “Macbeth. A Nightmare For Two” full of energy, situation comedy and a large portion of love for absurdities.
The Burghofbühne Dinslaken gives their Neuss rendezvous with the enchanting comedy „A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. In addition, the audience can expect a world premiere of the theater collective Safe Theater, which was until recently based in Russia. With „A Stubborn Bear” they bring the restless struggle for honor, authority and responsibility when interpreting Shakespeare’s works to the stage. Dance interpretations of „Romeo & Juliet” and „Hamlet” are available from the Italian imPerfect Dancers Company.
Daniel Finkernagel & the Viola Company master a tightrope walk between rock and baroque. They leave the two drama kings William Shakespeare and Freddie Mercury in „Drama! Shakespeare & Queen” meet in the Globe Neuss. It will also be musical with the internationally sought-after duo David Orlowsky & David Bergmüller, who explore unimagined worlds of sound with clarinet and lute.
In „Shakespeare’s Villains” by Steven Berkoff, Philipp Alfons Heitmann puts on an theatrical tour de force through the pantries of Shakespeare’s characters.
The legendary Patrick Spottiswoode brings the stories about the life of Shakespeare into the world in a witty and funny way. In his program “Shakespeare’s Backstories”, Giles Abbott tells that Shakespeare stole one or two stories from his collection of material. And last but not least, not only cineastes get their money’s worth at „Edward II., Die Liebe bin ich”, a film night of the Schauspiel Köln in the Globe Neuss.
But what would the Shakespeare Festival be without the numerous accompanying programmes? Introductions, audience discussions with directors – including Pınar Karabulut – and actors, as well as a wide range of workshops make the Shakespeare Festival what it is: a large, inspiring festival full of encounters for people of all ages.
The introductions to the performances are designed jointly by artistic director Maja Delinić and Shakespeare expert Christine Schmidle, who has worked at the London Globe for many years and is a freelance director herself.
