International Shakespeare Festival Craiova 14th-26th April-Programme
The celebration of the 10th Craiova International Shakespeare Festival in 2016 coincides with the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. The motto of this year edition is a reference to Ben Jonson’s famous line, as well as to Stanley Wells’ well-known title – “Shakespeare For All Time”. This year festival brings to Craiova 46 events dedicated to the Bard’s world, reuniting in Romania companies and personalities from Great Britain, Japan, Israel, South Africa, India, Portugal, Poland, Bulgaria, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Romania.
During the ten days of the festival, internationally acclaimed theatres and companies will bring their performances to Romania. The 2016 Craiova International Shakespeare Festival opens on April 14th with the Tokyo Saitama Theatre’s “Richard II” staged by the legendary director Yukio Ninagawa who presents about 60 actors from both their Saitama Gold Theatre and Saitama Next Theatre, thus bringing the generations together.
The Craiova “Marin Sorescu” National Theatre will present its premiere of “Julius Caesar”, staged by the American director and producer Peter Schneider. Great Britain will be represented by the Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory Theatre, Worcester Repertory Theatre and the Flute Theatre with their performances of “Hamlet” directed by Andrew Hilton, “The Comedy of Errors” directed by Ben Humphrey, and “Hamlet, Who’s There?” directed by Kelly Hunter. Another “Hamlet” will come from South Africa, while the Baltic House Theatre Festival of St Petersburg will bring their “Macbeth” directed by the Belgian director Luk Perceval. The Festival will close, on April 23rd, with several exciting performances: a community play of “Romeo and Juliet” created by the British director Philip Parr with the local community of Craiova, the Schaubuhne’s “Richard III” directed by Thomas Ostermeier – the recipient of this year Shakespeare Prize awarded by the Festival – , “Julius Caesar. Spared Parts” directed by Romeo Castellucci, and the acrobatic performance by the Mira-Art Acrobatic Dance Theatre in Gdansk that will take place on top of the building of the Craiova National Theatre and in the “William Shakespeare” Square.
The 2016 Craiova Shakespeare Festival will also present one-person shows coming from Sweden (Jonas Nerbe’s “William”), Poland (Piotr Kondrat’s “Shakespeare – 7 Clowns”), and India (Raju Bera’s “Macbeth Badya”), as well as concerts from Great Britain, Portugal and Romania.
The performances will take place both in theatres such as the “Marin Sorescu” National Theatre, the “Colibri” Theatre, the Students’ House, the “Oltenia” Philharmonic or the “Buia” Hall of the University of Craiova, and in unconventional spaces such as the Main Hall of the University of Craiova, “Fratii Buzesti” Square, “William Shakespeare” Square, “Mihai Viteazul” Square or Cetate Cultural Port. Some of the performances and events will also be organized in other towns in the Oltenia region – Ramnicu-Valcea, Turnu-Severin, Slatina, Targu-jiu –, as well as in Bucharest.
