Craiova International Shakespeare Festival-home edition

International Shakespeare Festival, home edition
The 12th International Shakespeare Festival, that had been scheduled to take place, in its classic form,April 23rd – May 3rd 2020, has been cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and re-scheduled for 2021.
Craiova National Theatre has created the online edition of this festival, on https://www.facebook.com/shakespearefestivalcraiova Facebook page, where a series of performances and social media interventions will celebrate William Shakespeare’s work during the time dedicated from the beginning to this event, April 23rd – May 3rd 2020. In parallel, until April 26th, in collaboration with the TVR and TVR3 Production House, 12 episodes of the series dedicated to Romanian performances based on the great playwright’s works are to be broadcast on TVR3. The episodes, of about 10 minutes each, are structured around the best known Shakespearean plays and most produced in Romania, bringing unique images of the creators of these great performances as well as archive images of the performances presented throughout time on our stages. Starting from an archive that is more than 25 years old, our Shakespeare Festival will recreate the steps that have brought this event to the international recognition gained so far. The video archive will give us performances of the great directors Silviu Purcarete, Vlad Mugur, Tompa Gabor, while famous companies from all over the world and important names of the international theatre such as Robert Wilson, Declan Donnellan, Berliner Ensemble, Cheek by Jowl, Yuri Butusov will join the initiative of the ”Marin Sorescu” Theatre which, on this occasion, is celebrating its close bond with the directorSilviu Purcarete by posting 5 of the performances he staged in Craiova.
”We have tried to understand how we can be together even under these difficult circumstances. Fortunately, technology allows us to create virtual spaces that we can share with others. This home edition is a promise that our festival will go on, regardless of the obstacles encountered.
Maybe the most sensitive nuance of this edition that we have named ”The Universal Shakespeare – home edition” is represented by the home sonnets. We will open with the Sonnets presented by Emil Boroghina, and close with Robert Wilson’s, while the red thread will be carried by actors from more than 20 countries who will open their homes and souls to bring the Universal Shakespeare, in their mother tongue, to our homes and souls. Until we meet again in the theatres, let us #stayathome with Shakespeare! Artists and audiences will create together a festival edition that we will always remember”, stated Vlad Dragulescu, artistic director of the Craiova National Theatre.
William Shakespeare’s life and work will be celebrated by actors from Germany, Poland, Holland, Bulgaria, Slovenia, China, USA, France, Latvia, Greece, Macedonia, Canada, India etc via live interventions on the https://www.facebook.com/shakespearefestivalcraiova/ Facebook page.
