19th Gdańsk Shakespeare Festival 31st July-9th August Programme
The Shakespeare Festival on its 19th edition returns to the traditional summer date. This year it will take place on 31st July-9th August. The festival is one of its kind in Poland and one of the largest in the whole world. Its organizers – the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre and Theatrum Gedanense Foundation – each year present the greatest Shakespearean plays from around the world.
During the 19th edition plays from Poland, Denmark, Hungary, Portugal, Romania and England will be presented. Among these, works of renowned masters like Luk Perceval (’Macbeth’, Baltic House, St. Petersburg), László Bocsárdi (’Hamlet’, Tamási Áron Theatre, Sfântu-Gheorghe), Robert Sturua (’Julius Ceasar’, Rustaveli Theatre, Georgia) or the British icon of avant-garde music – The Tiger Lillies (’The Tiger Lillies perform Hamlet’, Republique Theatre, Copenhagen). Maria Joao, Portuguese jazz star, will also present her Shakespearean programme.
During these year’s edition of the Shakespeare Festival staged will be three plays from the final of Best Polish Staging of Shakespeare’s Work of the Season aspiring to win the Golden Yorick prize.
The festival always includes a wide spectrum of workshops, artistic events and meetings with theatre creators.
